It's very hard to find an heirloom bean that is both a tasty fresh snap green bean and makes an excellent dried soup bean, but this is the bean. Cherokee Trail of Tears beans probably date back much further than written records. It was found in American archeological digs sown into the hem of Native American womens' clothing, which makes this bean truly special. The pods are about 6" long and the flower that produces the pod is a delicate pink. It is a pole bean variety so there is a need to trellis, but there is nothing stopping you from trying the Three Sisters planting method with these beans (corn stalk for supporting the vines, beans for fulfilling the needs of nitrogen in the corn, and a squash vine because it creates an small moisture ecosystem at the base of the plants. If you want to read more about it, here is some information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Sisters_(agriculture)
Directions:
Directly sow beans outdoors after any danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed. If you want fresh snap beans, harvest pods when green, if you also want dry beans for Winter, leaves some of the pods on the vine to dry naturally and then harvest for dry beans. Remember, support with fence, trellis, bamboo teepee poles, arbor or corn stalk.
