Sunflower seeds, Procut Red F1

Sunflower seeds, Procut Red F1

I am torn about the F1 Sunflowers. They are very beautiful, pollen-less, and look stunning in bouquets; however they do not completely fit the criteria of wanting a fully heirloom garden. So let's dig into this (but skip if you already know). What are F1 hybrid seeds? F1 hybrid seeds refers to the selective breeding of a plant by cross pollinating two different parent plants. In genetics, the term is an abbreviation for Filial 1- literally “first children.” It is sometimes written as F1, but the terms mean the same. Most of the gem corns we know, with the beautiful colors, are a selected interbreeding in order to produce different dent corn that has many colors. We could consider that F1. It is different than GMO in that the genetics are altered only by selectively putting plants next to each other and letting them intermingle. So, given that, I am including a few F1s in the library of the urban farm and continue to think about this. I hope it is interesting to you also.

It took years of breeding efforts to produce this impressive Red ProCut Sunflower. Early blooms are produced on long, strong, single stems.

The Procut F1 Sunflower is a gorgeous cut flower for bouquets. Or if you are thinking of becoming a Market Grower, go with a few of the Procut Sunflowers in bouquet and stun the pants off of passersby. The first time I saw a Rose-colored Sunflower I was so happy. I hope these make your garden pleasantly filled with vertical color. The sun flowers are 4–6" heads and are deep-red with brown disks. They are a bracted Single-Stem sunflower, which means many different flowers can grow on 1 plant, but each flower will have only 1 stem.
